seeing the small gains and running with short legs

Standard

Its been about 6 months since I started my physical journey for my police application. My journey has taken me in circles and squiggles up and down the eventful path of what is now my new normal. GOSH it has gone fast.

I have lifted many weights and ran more kilometers than I care to think about. If I told myself 6 months ago that I would be lifting or squatting or pressing what I am today I probably would have laughed, very hard!  I can’t say that I am where I want to be, that will still be some time away but I am damn proud of what I can do. I have never felt better or stronger and when I look back and reflect on how I was feeling I didn’t realize how sluggish I was or if *touch wood* someone was to attack me I wouldn’t have been able to defend myself, but now, I think I could give most people a run for their money if it came to protecting myself.

When I first started my blog I outlined my weekly routine, I’ve pretty much doubled what I started off with and it’s not easy but very rewarding, especially now that I am at the point where I am noticing physical changes. I am happy to admit that in the six months I have lost 6 kg and am half way to being back to my goal weight; its amazing how hard it is to shift the kilos once you’ve eaten too much chocolate and drank too much coffee.

I haven’t completed a beep test in a while but my last test I did do was one of the best I have ever done, in saying this I can’t stop myself from having a rant about being short and running.

WHY can’t my legs grow just for the time that I am running…I just want to make it that little bit easier to cover more distance. I watch my partner run and one of his steps is at least two of mine so by the time he is running comfortably I am sprinting. It’s not fair! I maintain the theory that, yes it requires more energy to use larger muscles BUT energy can be replenished, whereas little legs stay the same. (I know it’s more complicated than that) Has anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Anyway, being the end of the year I am feeling reflective on all that I have achieved and not achieved. I hope that the new year brings new challenges and more fitness gains, but most of all I wish all of word-press and beyond much luck and prosperity.

Where Does Your Fat Go When You Lose Weight? | IFLScience.

If there is one thing that I am actually doing a lot of these days, it is working out so one would assume fat burning goes with this right? Except, I have never stopped and asked myself where does the fat go or how is my body getting rid of it..

I’ve watched all the medical shows that there is on television, many showing the obese and the surgery/ complications that goes with having too much fat. I am always engrossed when they show liposuction or tummy tucks because of the sheer amount of fat that is generally removed-followed by being a little grossed out that there is also lumpy yellow fat inside my body.

Out of all the things I have heard on my fitness journey I have never really heard this theory about how fat is burned, the article is interesting just like IFL Science articles usually are, so take some time to see what happens to your fat when it is ‘burned’ off.

Iv’e been quiet in the blogging world for a little wile now mainly because I haven’t had much to say. The last few months have been busy and full of highs and lows. My police applications have been going along and I have ‘failed’ a couple, but there is always more to apply for. I say failed in quotations because I didn’t really fail, Iv’e gained invaluable experience which I can use when I re-apply.

I’m currently applying for Tasmanian Police and will hopefully have a physical date in the new year, If anyone is from Tasmania within the police force- some info would be great! On the plus side i’m running quicker and pushing heavier weights than ever! 6 months ago I would have laughed if I knew the weight that I can bench or squat now, but its just an ongoing process really and I can’t wait to see myself in  year..hopefully with an exciting new career.

This week and for many weeks I’ve been doing my usual routine, work, gym, sleep and repeat. I am pretty boring and I am happy to admit that, during the time off within that cycle I tend to watch movies, TV shows and listen to music, however the last few days I can’t get myself over the movie Jersey Boys directed by Clint Eastwood (Its pretty damn good ❤), I saw it a wile ago but can’t really forget about it…so much so I found myself doing hill sprints (in sand) to Sherry and many of the other great songs by The Four Seasons combined with some 80’s covers and hard rock… of course!

Aside from my boring life, I think lately I have been appreciating life a little more. I had an amazing friend who died a few years ago and he still reminds me to make sure that my life is full of the things that I want because nobody knows what will happen. So today I reflect on the things that I wish, want and appreciate:

Appreciate:

All the amazing people in my life that are supporting my journey into a new career. My partner, immediate family, friends and my trainer!

The animals that wont find a home this Christmas and to the ones who do; thank you to the wonderful people whom take the time to search the shelters instead of puppy farms. I like to visit the shelters to give the animals some love, they deserve attention too.

My food, I am a coeliac and now appreciate how gross food really is, why are there sooooo many additives and fillers to food..eew!! I appreciate my fresh vegetables, fruit and meat that come from local farmers. (trying to decrease my food footprint) #lookaftertheworldandsmallbusiness

Want

I want to eat scotch fingers again with chocolate on the bottom. (can’t there be a delicious gluten free version)

I want to buy Jersey Boys on DVD

I want the modern hospitality award to go and eat itself

Wish

I wish people all the best over the holidays and to be safe, drive carefully and donate something to those less fortunate, it doesn’t have to be much

I wish to meet the entertainers that star in my favorite productions. (and authors). For example Erich Bergen- THAT MAN IS TALENTED!!

I wish training would be a little easier, why can’t weights be easy? 😛

I wish everyone to have the happiest of holidays whether it be a sunny new years or a white Christmas.

Entrance exam update

Standard

I realize this is a little belated since I have been back from my entrance exam for a couple of weeks, but nevertheless I have been and conquered (I hope).
I think the easiest way for me to explain the day is to recap how it panned out, so here goes..

I woke up (*touch-wood*like most people do) and started to get ready. I wanted to make an impression so I went out before I flew to Brisbane and updated my ‘smartlookingpeoples’ attire which consisted of nice suit pants, suit jacket and two blouses because I knew I would change my mind as to which one I liked on the day ( FYI I did, about 4 times and also if I should have gone tucked or un-tucked) I caught a cab and deliberately arrived at the station 30 minutes early, this gave me time to go to the local cafe and buy a bottle of water.

I sat and waited in the waiting room where people started coming in and sitting, now don’t get me wrong I am not a judgmental person but I made a note of observing each person whom was coming into the room. I was surprised and shocked with the lack of dress code  that people were wearing and by this I mean tracksuit jumpers, sneakers and just overall casual attire, I am certain that the recruitment officers watch to see the effort applicants are making, or am I wrong?

The testing was structured similar to the following:

A reading comprehension test: in total applicants had 10 minutes to read and answer a series of questions.

A listening test, this test involved listening to an audio clip and then answering some questions the audio test is the same as the following test where the applicant then watched a video and answers questions. One of these tests required the ability to re account a scenario in 150 words which is to review how applicants can write in detail.

There are two timed tests one is 12 minutes and the other is 45, these tests are very similar to the Police prep book and website. I truly recommend this learning material as it is almost identical, the website also offers audio clips to practice with.

I was surprised as there was no psychological component, I assume this will come at a later date if I get through. At the end of the exam the recruitment officers said the wait will take 6-7  weeks for results as they are doing numerous testing days at this stage. I think this is a good sign because I can only conclude they are starting their recruitment drive, this also buys me time to really work on my fitness which is going quite well, I can almost do a full pull up myself…another few weeks and I will have it I think.

I recommend visiting stations and talking to officers, I did this myself while I was in Brisbane and they where more than welcoming and answered all my questions. My partner has been applying for the Fire Services for a few years now, and I know it is a different service but during interview phase they have asked how many fire fighters he has spoken too and if he can recall names.

I hope this information is helpful, I haven’t specified all of testing details because I think it is important to people to do the extra research themselves, just like I have 🙂 I look forward to updating this blog in a few weeks time, hopefully with a good result!

One small victory! QPS Here I come

Standard

The last few weeks have been hard, life has been busy and new changes have been made. It’s funny sitting here thinking to myself “just get over this week, then start fresh next week”, things aren’t bad just busy. Every night I have been saying there is not enough hours in the day and how I wish there could be more just to get everything done. I feel there is two solutions to this issue A) the world stops for a few and kicks back or B) Improve my time management. A sounds like the best option but that’s never going to happen; the world keeps revolving, business’ keep on making their coin and poor people don’t drive cars so you know, there isn’t any way to get to where I need to go (apparently)- thanks for that one Mr Hockey. B is probably what needs to happen but I’ve been so tired that I cant get the energy to possibly fit in any more into my day. I’ve been feeling a little run down and part of me thinks YES now I can get some actual time off of work but NO because then it will interfere with my training and health. I don’t understand how things get so busy that getting sick actually starts to sound like and option… now don’t get me wrong I don’t mean major sick just a minor flu kind of thing, which I’m half way to getting anyway.

Anyway in the last month I have:

1. I increased my beep test score.

2. Put my expression of interest in for QPS

3. Heard back within a week about my expression of interest

4. I now have my entrance exam date August 28th (2 weeks after putting the expression of interest in, I wasn’t meant to hear anything for 6 weeks) YAY

5. Booked flights and accommodation

6. Increased my squats to 25kg  and improving each session

7. getting closer to being able to do a pull up, I cant wait for that day.

8. Improving my practice exam scores.

9. Have listened to Bohemian Rhapsody 40 times. I love Queen, Its a great motivation song as soon as it hits 3.03.

I guess number 9 isn’t exactly relevant but it is such an amazing song. I remember when I was in the Green Day mosh-pit and we were waiting for them to come on stage, Bohemian Rhapsody came on over the radio and the entire mosh sung along (including the guitar sequence, of course!). Its a lifting experience to be standing with upwards of 1000 people from different socioeconomic backgrounds all singing the same song because it happened to come on over the radio and for the love of Queen but it will always stand true that music will always bring people together- I think Live Aid proved that over a number of years.

I mentioned earlier that I have been busy and haven’t had much time to fit in all the things I want to do but yesterday I decided I had to buy new runners; on top of not feeling well my running has suffered the last few weeks, I think I haven’t given myself enough rest..or so I’ve been told 😛 The runners are the same as my last pair just the current release which is now covered in a hideous purple but on the plus side I stand out at night when I run! My runners are Asics and like one of my previous blogs about my Aiscs socks I could write an entire post on how comfortable they are, I think I entertained the shop assistant (whom is now familiar with me because I refuse to shop for runners with any other shop assistant) when the only word I could come up with to describe them was ‘Squidgy’- I think this word for me, means- walking on clouds / unbelievable comfort. I definitely went for a run after buying them! Who wouldn’t?! I also bough a Fitbit to try and keep the motivation up, the run was going really well until I tripped myself over definitely looking fabulous in hideous purple shoes- if anyone saw a runner go ass over yesterday, It was me! I am A OK, sort of.
I think I have gone off topic enough to end it there. I hope everyone is having a great day and I will have an update blog once I have completed my entrance exam.

The picture today, is my lovely runners!! Comfortable as anything but hideous.

Update

Standard

Hi all I haven’t written on here lately and there have been a few developments/ change of plans. I recently decided instead of applying for SAPOL I would apply directly for QPS. I made this decision due to the fact it was always the end goal to move there so what better time than the present, right?
The process is mostly the same just a little backwards in terms of what the application process is like.

I believe it will be beneficial to apply to QPS first because there is no application submitted until you have registered your interest over the phone, wait 6-8 weeks and then if accepted you sit the entrance exam/medical and then submit an application online. If at any point I am unsuccessful I have at least had an opportunity to practice the exams ahead of applying for SAPOL.

On the fitness side of things QPS has a slightly more difficult test and I have upped my training to cater for that, however since my other post on practicing running at the required speed for the beep test, it seems to be working I have gone up another level which is very exciting for me, I am still not where I need to be for the beep test but I am nearly there, I hope by the time the 6-8 week waiting period is up I will be at my best. If i’m not I still have a little more time to get to the required fitness level anyway. I am happy to say my squats and bench presses are strong, I am now practicing more of the prone planks and ‘chin ups’ (I cant actually do one yet, but I am working on it)

For anyone interested this is the layout of the QPS fitness tests.

When I registered my interest over the phone I was able to ask the recruitment officer a few questions, however she was unable to comment on a couple, which were:

Is the aptitude section of the exam still the same structure as in the Police Prep book?

and

When is the next intake happening?

I would really like to talk to some officers that are in QPS, so my next step is calling recruitment again and finding out how I can go about that. If there are any reading this or applying, I encourage you to comment, I would really like to hear from people and start making a network base.

I hope anyone reading this can understand, It was rushed a little due to starting work soon.

Have  a great day!!

Picture was from Google, unsure of the author I have had it for quite some time.

the newest idea

Standard

Hi everyone,

I haven’t written on here in a wile so I just wanted to post an update as to where I am. The last time I did the beep test I didn’t do so well, I am still training like usual, for those of you who haven’t read my blog before it usually consists of two days of personal training (full body weights) and then a minimum of 20 minutes cardio. I then try to do cardio and weights another two times a week, on top of a job which is also physically demanding. Lately I have been trying to find my groove, I feel like I fell out of place a little after training so well for weeks and then  not competing the beep test to the score I intended. On top of having a lack of motivation I also had sprained calf muscles which meant I couldn’t run for a week and a half, I am now only just working back into running. Having sprained calf muscles allowed me to try some different cardio workouts like- interval training on a bike and the rowing machine. I found it exciting to be doing different exercises but it didn’t take me long to realize how much I had started to enjoy my running sessions.

The last beep test I did, my legs felt heavy and didn’t want to go any faster, I thought that doing the intervals on the bike would help- at least wile my calves were recovering but I knew something had to change to be able to move my legs faster. My partner had a brilliant idea of looking up the Km/h to the level on the beep test, I did and the result was really helpful which you can find here. I now know that to reach level 7 I have to be able to run 11.5 km/h for at least 7.5 minutes. I want to be able to go over level 7 which means to do this comfortably I should be running at 12-12.5 km/h for an extended period of 10 minutes or more…am I right?

I put this theory to the test last night- I figured because I was doing fartlek at 6 km/h for two minutes and then 9 km/h for another two lasting for 48 minutes I thought I would start practicing flat out sprinting at 10 km/h for as long as I could last, I only managed to hold the sprint for 2 minutes. I was slightly disappointed but I could feel during that period that my lungs weren’t struggling until the last 30-40 seconds, which meant my lungs weren’t to bad (in my eyes anyway), I figured the time would have been a lot worse if my lungs were giving out straight away. I tried the sprints a few more times with walking in-between, the times looked as followed:
1. walk for 2 minutes

2. run at 7 km/h for 1 minute

3. Sprint for 2 Minutes

4. walk for 1.5 or 2 minutes

5. run at 7 km/h for 1 minute

6. Sprint for 1.5 minutes

7. walk for 1.5 or 2 minutes

8. run at 7 km/h for 1 minute

9. sprint for 1 minute (I tried to go longer but couldn’t)

10. walk for 1.5 or 2 minutes

11. run at 7 km/h for 1 minute

12. sprint for just under 2 minutes

13. walk for 2 minutes

14. sprint for 1

15. walk for 1

16. sprint for 1.5

and walk to cool down.

I was impressed with my first attempt at the sprints. I think by doing this for a few weeks and hopefully upping the speed as I go I will be at the level I want to be in no time. I usually like running outside more, however in recent weeks I have found the treadmill to be helpful in the fact that I can monitor the speed closely and guarantee myself that I am running at an increased level.

I hope this makes sense to anyone reading!! I understand It is a little bit of a ramble, but If I don’t get it out I feel as if others might miss out on something they may not have previously thought of.

Anyway, Have a great day/ night everyone 🙂

As an after thought, I found this really great website on eating Protein, it dismisses the myths especially for females who are scared to eat it.
